The Art Shop One Kings Lane

As we prepare for our move to CT this Friday, all I can think about lately is decor. And right up there with a new coffee table and TV stand is new artwork. Enter ONE KINGS LANE. If you haven't perused through their ART SHOP you're seriously missing out. Their collection of prints ranges from bold and abstract to original and vintage photography. There is certainly a piece to satisfy all tastes.

My Favorite Candles

We love lighting candles in our apartment. In fact, I think my boyfriend likes them more than I do. My favorites are all below that give a nice welcoming scent when you walk through the door. They even smell great when they aren't lit!

Weekly Roundup: March 13, 2015

Things I learned this week: life is too flipping short. Too short to waste your time worrying about filling a stupid apartment. Or how much money you'll potentially be losing on an empty space you aren't living in. Or how that shade of Pantone 116 will look projected on a screen. It isn't worth stewing over. And sure, that's easier said than done, but you know what's easier? Breathing. Stepping back and taking a breath. Letting it go. Because in the end, if you've got your health, your friends and family, and your happiness, you're living the goddamn dream. Everything else is just noise.

Life was simple in the 90s and these images are PERFECTION.

We're Moving!

This past month, my boyfriend and I decided to cut our lease short and make the move back to CT. What was bound to eventually happen come January 2016 has been moved up and opened up a new can of worms. That being, trying to get out of an NYC apartment lease early. And that's a story for another day, perhaps one where I'm sitting beachside with a margarita in hand. Until then, I'm trying not to think about it.

But alas, yes we are leaving NYC and we feel great about it. It's time for a new chapter and we're ready to be in CT. Yes, a commute is back in the cards, but I will gladly trade that to be closer to family, have SO MUCH MORE SPACE, and to just get back to a less frenzied pace. And to be honest, as much as I've loved living in NYC and am happy I did it, I never really wanted to be here to begin with. I like being in the suburbs. I like leaving the chaos of work behind in another state and going home. So on that note, I thought it would be fun to detail some of the things I'll miss and some of the things I can't wait to leave behind...

 What I'll miss...

  • Seamless. Sure, they probably have this in CT, but can you get freshly baked cookies delivered to your door? No.
  • Sleeping-in. Moving, brings commuting back into the picture. So that means losing the luxury of rolling out of bed at 8:15am and still making it to work on time.
  • NYC at night. I love NYC at night. I love looking up and seeing the deep navy of the sky through the tall buildings and feeling a sense of calm in the city that never sleeps.
  • Central Park. Coming home and getting to run this loop is friggen awesome.
  • Endless options of bars and restaurants. Perhaps my waistline will whittle down.
  • Being minutes from some of the most amazing places this city has to offer. Central Park. The Brooklyn Bridge. The Empire State Building. Little Italy. The MET. The Museum of Natural History. Bloomingdales. Rockefeller Center. Bryant Park. Chelsea. Meatpacking. The Highline. The list goes on and on.

What I sure as shit can't wait to say goodbye to...
  • Pigeons. They are Satan's birds. They sit on my window ledge and coo ALL. DAY. LONG. And they shit everywhere. Seriously. All over the windows and all over the sidewalks.
  • The neighbors upstairs. I won't miss you rearranging furniture at 2 am. Or running to the door at 7am in your heels. Or hearing your alarm clock go off through the ceiling. Get your act together people.
  • Overlooking an alley. There is no view and you get zero natural light. No wonder I have trouble getting up in the morning.
  • Paying an astronomical amount in rent. There is nothing else to say about this.
  • Living in fear of a mouse appearing. Ew.
  • Grocery shopping. I've hinted at this before, but aside from the pigeons outside my window, food shopping in NYC is the bane of my existence. Food Emporium, listen up: You can have more than one cashier working; eggs don't go in the same bag as your gallon of milk; and your aisles are too narrow.
  • Duane Reade. They never have what you're looking for. In fact, if you work in their marketing/PR department, you might want to consider changing the tagline to "You need it, we don't have it."
  • Packed subway rides. Nothing worse than being packed like a sardine on a hot summer day.
  • Or empty subway cars. You know there's a smelly cat on that car. Take this as your warning, don't get in it. Ever.

Well that felt therapeutic.

Emmanuelle Alt

We all have them - style crushes - and among mine is Emmanuelle Alt, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris. If you're on Pinterest, you've seen her before. The six-foot lanky beauty, who doesn't wear makeup ($!?#) and hasn't had surgery, masters the parisienne chic look effortlessly. You'll often find her clad in jeans, a t-shirt, and a blazer - minimal at its best. It has me rethinking my entire approach to getting dressed, because wouldn't it be amazing if we could just look like that everyday? Check out some inspiration on how to get Emmanuelle's look below.

2015 Oscar Dresses

So I didn't watch most of the Oscar's this year, but I did take the time to roundup some of my favorite dresses. This year, I thought there was more I didn't like than those that I was completely wowed by - did anybody else feel this way? So here it goes...

(Above) Emma Stone and Jennifer Aniston. The embellishment on Emma's dress was amazing in my opinion and Jennifer's was such a flattering nude, she never does wrong in my book.

Whiskey Hound Dog

To continue our Valentines celebration this weekend, I took my boyfriend to a few new bars that were out of his usual norm. Both places MAYSVILLE and FLATIRON ROOM (written about HERE), cater to whiskey drinkers with over 800 different whiskeys available. Being an avid margarita drinker, I decided to steer away from my usual orders and go out on a whim and try something new. Luckily the bartender was very knowledgeable and pointed me in the right direction towards a whiskey cocktail. With a little bite to start, I actually ended up really liking it. And lucky for you, it's easy to make at home!

Whiskey Hound Dog

  • 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 1/2 oz whiskey (or bourbon if you prefer)
  • 1/4 oz honey
  • 1/4 oz fresh lime juice
  • Mint leaf

Combine ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Pour into glass and garnish with mint leaf.

Shades of Grey

Grey doesn't always mean prison grey. In fact, there are so many different shades of grey with different undertones that you can find one to work in any space in your home. From your kitchen, bedroom, living room, or bathroom, the key is to paint plenty of swatches in areas that get different light so you won't be surprised after the fact. The pictures below show that grey is definitely a new neutral.

Banana Republic Baby

Under the creative direction of Marissa Webb, BANANA REPUBLIC has been killing it lately and as it only continues to get better and better, it's quite fitting that she has decided to debut a limited edition, 13 piece capsule collection. Available online February 25th, New Yorkers can shop the capsule as early as Wednesday, February 18th in the Fifth Avenue store. Prices will range from $24 to $198 and won't sacrifice on style or quality for your little ones. Seriously, check out that cableknit set, absolutely precious.

Marc Tetro

Have you heard of MARC TETRO? I stumbled across his work in a bookstore and, being an extreme dog lover, I thought they were just the cutest things. Now, I'm very, very biased and partial to anything that contains labs or just labs in general, but I loved all of his prints. They would certainly make for a fantastic gift for any dog lover.

If You Could Go Anywhere

If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be? Somewhere far away and exotic? Or somewhere close that you've never been before? A few places I would chose to answer that question with are Big Sur, Patagonia, and Bali. All offer vastly different experiences (and travel times), but certainly don't sacrifice on breathtaking views. I hope to visit ALL of these places in my lifetime.

No-Bake Energy Bites

While perusing recipes on a recent snow day, I stumbled across this simple batch of NO-BAKE ENERGY BITES. Luckily I had all the ingredients on hand and in less than an hour, I had a delicious snack. I also found these perfect to grab and eat with my morning coffee/tea at work. Simple snack and simple breakfast. A win-win for me!

I can't help but think of warm weather when I see pineapples. So it's fitting that since I've been craving warmer weather that I can't stop seeing them everywhere - dresses, shirts, bathing suits, you name it and there's a pineapple slapped on it. Lucky for me though everything has been super cute.

After hearing great things from friends about similar services, my boyfriend and I decided to give PLATED a try and we couldn't have been happier. For those of you unfamiliar with PLATED, they send you fresh ingredients each week to make chef-approved recipes. The service alleviates the constant issue of buying too much and seeing it go to waste a week later because you can't use it quick enough. It is the perfect solution for those who want to learn how to cook, those who are looking to have delicious meals with everything readily available, and those who hate (NYC) grocery stores. A dream come true for me!

Cozy Spaces

Winter is in full force. It's cold, I can't hibernate, I can't take a vacation (yet), so what's a girl to do? Cuddle up and wish I could call one of these cozy spaces home.

Spaghetti Aglio E Olio

The grocery stores in NYC are the bane of my existence. It's one of the things about living in NYC that I hate. They're tiny, everything is overpriced, there is one cashier open and the line is 20 people deep, and you're stuck behind an old lady complaining about chicken being $4. Inevitably, I come home angry and missing half of the things I set out to purchase. Seeing as how that is the state of affairs, often times my boyfriend and I find ourselves with the bare minimum in our refrigerator. So what do you do when the last thing you'd rather brave is the grocery store checkout line? Stick to one of Ina's old standby recipes or, according to my Mom, my Nonny's recipe "because she's older."

Modern Retreat in Brazil

I came across this hillside gem in the most recent issue of ELLE DECOR and was immediately drawn to it. While the modern style isn't one that appeals to me, what I loved was how this home sits in start contrast to the lush greenery that surrounds it. The open floor-plan, use of glass and concrete throughout, and minimalist decor all juxtapose the natural elements that surround the home.

Full Thoughts

Or in other words, think of your present circumstances, whatever they may be, as your starting point or your square one. From this point, there is no clearly defined path for what is attainable or possible. It's all what you make of it from here. And that square one, or that starting point, will move around as life moves on.
